Implied Consent

It was not written
in the marriage contract
it was not stated
in the vows
it was implied
by her silence
when
bruised and broken
she hid beneath
long sleeves
heavy make-up
and a smile
at the family picnic

I like this, Rhonda. Is this from your personal experience, or from observation of friends?

It’s drawn from my own experiences as well as from countless others I know. When you love your husband, you make so many excuses for his behavior that you begin to think it’s your fault he’s hurting you. At some point, though, we all have to take our power back from the abuser and decide that it’s NOT okay. It took me a while and counseling, but I got out of the situation. I understand, though, those who continue to consent to be treated badly, because of the years I allowed it. I hope that some of my poems get through to them. I’ll have to post my spoken word poem here another time. It’s titled “A Conspiracy of Silence”.
