When we held on tightly to each other

  like frightened children

      sharing the same bad dream,

you gave me flowers and smiles

I gave you poems and problems

When we stood strong for each other

    against the world,

        even against our mothers,

you knew we’d never grow apart

I knew you’d never break my heart

When we promised to love each other

    through wrinkles and

        and silver hair..

When we spoke of forever

    as something we’d face together…

When we cherished all that we had

instead of cursing all that we lacked,

you didn’t know that I’d grow up one day,

and I didn’t know that you wouldn’t

(with love to my ex-husband Michael Hendrix)
